Peru: Indigenous defender Olivia Bisa Tirko says she received threats after confronting the extractivist industry in the Amazon

Democracy Now

According to Democracy Now, Olivia Bisa Tirko, president of the autonomous territorial government of the Chapra Nation in Peru, denounced that she “received threats for confronting [...] the extractivist industry in the Peruvian Amazon” during an interview to the source.

The defender was in New York for an "Earth Day hearing", during which environmental activists from all around the world gathered to condemn Citibank for being the world’s second-largest funder of coal, oil and gas. Activists blocked the entrances of the global headquarters of Citigroup, asking the bank to stop financing companies in this sector.

Olivia says that, since 2022, she has been receiving lawsuits and death threats against her and her family.

We invited Citigroup to comment on the statements and their response is available.
