PL told to analyse human rights record for new owners by Amnesty International

The Premier League has been urged by Amnesty International to examine the human rights records for new club owners ahead of Newcastle United’s potential takeover by a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium...

The human rights organisation, however, has sent “a new human rights-compliant test” to the Premier League and called upon them to alter the owners’ and directors’ test in order to “overhaul their standards” regarding human rights...

Human rights group Grant Liberty also criticised the Premier League for allowing the takeover by the PIF.

Grant Liberty spokesperson Lucy Rae said: “If allowed, the Premier League risks in return associating itself with tyranny and will be guilty of validating rule by fear - sending a clear message that if you have the cash, it is fine to abduct, imprison and torture innocent citizens, including the relatives, women and children, of those who dare speak out. This includes members of the Royal Family proving no one is exempt."...

“If allowed, the Newcastle United takeover risks making a mockery of these important campaigns. We are asking the Premier League and its Chief Executive Richard Masters to examine closely its moral compass."
