Qatar government silent over state investigation into World Cup migrant worker death

The Qatar government remains silent over a state investigation into the death of a Filipino migrant worker during the 2022 World Cup...

But, as the Gulf nation has returned to the spotlight amid a prospective Qatari takeover of Manchester United, its government has yet to clarify the investigation’s status more than two months after the incident.

The Athletic has made repeated requests for an update in recent days but the Qatari government has not provided any response to our queries. Salam Petroleum also did not respond to our request for comment...

Workers on the site said the man’s name was Alex and his death was subsequently confirmed by the Filipino foreign affairs ministry. Those at the site said the worker slipped off a ramp while walking alongside the vehicle and fell headfirst against concrete.

They added he was present to fix the lights in a car park and multiple people spoken to by The Athletic, who could not be identified to protect their jobs, claimed the worker had not been wearing a safety harness at the time of the incident. It is not known whether one was provided by the company.

The sources also said they were surprised that the victim and the driver of the forklift were not accompanied by a third worker, who would ordinarily assist in the process. Salam Petroleum did not respond to requests for comment at the time. The Sealine Resort was also approached for comment...
