AidData's 2022-2023 RI Perceptions Survey found that 79% viewed China as actively supporting development in their nation and 38% preferred China as an infrastructure partner, but leaders also expressed concerns over the environmental impact, transparency, and corruption associated with Chinese projects.
A new deep-dive study from AidData identified $385 billion in Chinese loans that were not included in official statistics. That equates to nearly half of China’s overseas lending for the construction of roads, railways, and other projects being hidden.
