Response from Petrobras to allegations of labour abuse in ethanol supply chains

In July 2021, Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) completed the full divestment of its equity interest in Petrobras Distribuidora S.A. (BR). In this way, Petrobras was totally getting rid of its distribution arm. BR was a company operating in the fuel station segment, which was renamed Vibra Energia. Since then, Petrobras no longer holds assets, operations, or equity interests in Vibra or other companies operating in the fuel station segment in Brazil. Petrobras maintains a licensing agreement with Vibra, which allows Vibra to use Petrobras-owned brands exclusively in the fuel station and aviation segments.

We emphasize that the management of assets and operations owned by Vibra (including supplier management, resales, and other commercial activities of the licensee) is Vibra's sole responsibility. Nevertheless, the existing brand licensing agreement stipulates that the licensee, Vibra, must safeguard the good name and reputation of the Petrobras-owned brands it is licensed to use, refraining from any act or action that could harm their reputation. Considering the issues highlighted in the report prepared by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, Petrobras promptly requested clarifications from Vibra regarding this matter. As soon as Vibra provides the report with the relevant information, Petrobras will take appropriate measures. We reaffirm our commitment to combating conditions akin to slavery and upholding respect for human rights.
