S. Korea: KEPCO pressures workers to drop dispatch lawsuits, workers face job losses despite previous win in worker status case

"S. Korea: KEPCO pressures workers to drop dispatch lawsuits…workers face job losses despite previous winning worker status case", 25 July 2024

KEPCO is exerting pressure on workers who have won worker status verification lawsuits against the company, urging them to withdraw their cases.

…Island power generation workers, who have been generating electricity on the islands for more than 30 years, emerged victorious in the first round of a lawsuit against KEPCO in June last year. … These 145 workers, employed by subcontractors for decades, were recognized by the court as being illegally dispatched….

…Despite the court ruling, KEPCO has not directly employed the workers. In January, KEPCO informed the victorious workers to abandon their lawsuits and transfer to a subsidiary. …Last month, KEPCO proposed establishing a labor-management expert council to the subcontractor unions…However, even before the council's first meeting on August 10, KEPCO notified JBC that it would terminate contracts on August 14, rendering JBC workers jobless regardless of the negotiation outcomes.

…[KEPCO] stated that only those who agreed to the transfer would be consulted, making it difficult to hold separate consultations with those who disagreed. … Consequently, approximately 200 workers who did not consent to the transfer face job termination on August 14.
