Sainsbury's response to Oxfam's analysis of supermarket HRIAs and commitments

Friday 19th January 2023

Oxfam’s report provides a valuable assessment of the state of play of Human Rights Impact Assessments in the food industry.

We’ve published one HRIA in prawns and have conducted another in meat processing that will be published in the coming year.

HRIAs are an important tool within human rights due diligence processes. We remain committed to using them appropriately to assess and address human rights impacts in high-risk supply chains.

We welcome the recommendations in the report to help improve how HRIAs are conducted and used. Meaningful consultation with rightsholders in the design and implementation of the assessment and action plans is vital, as is the need for transparency. We encourage dialogue with Oxfam, our peers, and research organisations on how we can drive improvement and effectiveness of HRIAs going forward.
