Silvestre Fortades, Jr. and Rose Marie Galias qwere killed by suspected military agents on January 15, 2022 in Barangay San Vicente, Barcelona, Philippines. Fortades Jr. and Galias were both members of Samahan ng mga Magsasaka sa Sorsogon (SAMASOR) and Anakpawis Partylist – Sorsogon, organizations that fight for the rights of workers and peasants. Local organisations claim that peasant activists in the Philippines have a target on their head because of their resistance against large-scale landlords and their demands of democratic reforms, better wages and working conditions, end of extortionate loans, and the right to land.
