Uganda: Contractors at Sinohydro Karuma Hydro Power Project required to observe workers' health & safety requirements

"Maintain safety of employees at Karuma dam construction"

Board members of the Uganda Electricity Generation want the contractors of 600mw Sinohydro Karuma Hydro Power Project to put emphasis on the health and safety of workers. Eng. Proscovia Margaret Njuki, a board member said all workers should wear health and safety equipment. Njuki said health and safety equipment that get worn out should be replaced from time to time.

The board and management said this while undertaking a monitoring and supervision of the progress of the project located in Oyam and Kiryandongo districts. The project manager Song Yigon said that one worker died last month after he decided to irregularly take a ride on a dumper, a machine that transports materials, which rolled over and crushed him to death...
