UK: Government plans on using facial recognition smartwatches to monitor foreign offenders raising privacy concerns

EFF

In early August 2022, the media outlet the Guardian revealed that the Government of the United Kingdom awarded a contract to the technology company Buddi Limited to deliver facial recognition smartwatches that will be used to monitor foreign offenders 24/7 under the plans from the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice. The civil society organization Privacy International expresses its concern and warns that these technologies facilitate government discrimination and human rights abuses without any accountability. Adding, that there was no other country in Europe that has deployed this dehumanizing and invasive technology against migrants.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Buddi Limited to respond. The company did not respond.
