Six pick-up trucks and a lorry arrived in an area recently retaken by the Pataxó people and opened fire on the community. The attack took place in the village of Várzea da Palmeira, in the indigenous territory of Barra Velha (Bahia). One man was shot in the back. The Barra Velha indigenous territory is made up of several villages of the Pataxó people and has suffered intense conflicts since the early 2000s. It was in this same territory, in other villages, that Gustavo Pataxó, aged just 14, was murdered in September 2022, as were Samuel and Nawy in January 2023.

A leader of the Pataxó people, who preferred not to be identified for fear of the persecution they have been suffering, said that on the 29th, the Várzea da Palmeira community advanced into yet another retaken area, reaching the headquarters of a farm. When they announced the repossession to the workers on the property, the manager left the car with the keys and abandoned the place. In the late afternoon of the same day, the indigenous people who were at the farm's headquarters were attacked. "They came out shooting to kill our people," said the leader.
