In June 2015, the Philippine-Misereor Partnership Inc. (PMPI) published reports on their website that a barge hired by Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC) destroyed three fisher boats off the coast of Manicani Island in the Philippines. On 1 September 2015, HMC filed a complaint with the Office of the City Prosecutor in Taguig City, Metro Manila alleging criminal cyber-libel by PMPI under the Cyber Crime Prevention Act. The complaint named PMPI staff members Yolanda Esguerra, Candy Hidalgo, Edel Garingan, and Victor Morill as defendants. They received a summons from the prosecutor more than a month after the case was filed. On 10 June 2015, the defendants surrendered to a Manila court and were granted bail.
