Bangladesh: Around 50,000 migrants did not receive benefits after LIC insurance scheme fails to inform them of entitlements; incl., co. non-response

An insurance scheme set up by the insurance company LIC Bangladesh along with the Government's Wage Earners’ Welfare Board is allegedly not reaching eligible migrant workers because of 'negligible management', according to an article in New Age released in January 2024.

Despite the fact the agency collects a mandatory insurance premium from each migrant, the workers are not fully informed about the benefits of the scheme.

This means that around 1600 migrant workers or their families have received insurance benefits since the scheme started four years ago, yet around 50,000 are eligible for benefits and did not receive them due to a lack of awareness.

In January 2024, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited LIC Bangladesh to respond to the article. The company did not respond.
