Zero Tolerance Initiative urges Consumer Goods Forum companies to prevent violence & killings of defenders in supply chains

Zero Tolerance Initiative (ZTI) has urged the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) – a CEO-led organisation that brings together brings consumer goods retailers and manufacturers – to play a key role in advancing human rights and improve corporate practices related to human rights defenders and environmental rights defenders. Through a webinar organized by ZTI, human rights defenders from Peru, Colombia and Indonesia called on companies to take more robust actions to prevent conflicts and provide stronger protections for those trying to defend their homes, their lands and territories, their fundamental rights, ways of life, and their forests from harmful commodity production. Defenders shared cases from Peru and Colombia allegedly linked to global oil palm supply chains connected to major transnational agribusiness, food and beverage companies who are members of the CGF, including Nestlé, Cargill and Unilever. Other companies cited in the webinar were Alicorp, OLAMSA, OLPESA, Ocho Sur, Palm Oleo and Rossel.

In September 2020, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited these companies to respond. Alicorp, Cargill, Nestlé, Ocho Sur, and Unilever responded. OLAMSA, OLPESA, Palm Oleo, and Rossel did not.
