Mandé Norte/Murindó project, Colombia - 2009

English

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Muriel Mining to respond to the following submission by Colombia Solidarity Campaign to the UK Parliament Joint Committee on Human Rights:

- “Rio Tinto and the impact of the Mandé Norte/Murindó mining exploration project on indigenous Embera and Afrocolombian communities in the provinces of Choco and Antioquia, Colombia” [DOC], Colombia Solidarity Campaign, 23 Apr 2009

“The Mandé Norte/Murindó project is being pursued on collectively-owned Indigenous and Afrocolombian land against the express wishes of the communities involved. It is alleged that it has been accompanied by intimidation, deceit, manipulation and falsification of community consultation procedures, militarisation, terrorisation and forced displacement of families.”

The company sent the following statement in response:

- Muriel Mining response [DOC], 16 May 2009

“Muriel Mining respects the traditions, culture and beliefs of the communities who lives on the territory around area of influence of the exploration project.”

Recent statement by Rio Tinto regarding Mandé Norte/Murindó project:

- Rio Tinto response [DOC], 6 May 2009

“Rio Tinto is not currently conducting its own exploration in Colombia and maintains a limited presence in country”

ABColombia issued the following comments on the Muriel Mining response:

- Rejoinder re Muriel Mining response [PDF], 16 Jun 2009

“Inter-Church Commission for Justice and Peace (Comisión Intereclesial de Justicia y Paz – CIJP) and Peace Brigades International (PBI)...were the subject of insinuations apparently made by the Muriel Mining Corporation, implying links with illegal armed actors in Colombia”

Muriel Mining subsequently sent the following response:

- Response re ABColombia rejoinder [DOC], 6 Jul 2009

“It hasn’t been the intention of Muriel to discredit any organization nor to associate the work of anyone with organizations that are on the margins of the law.”

Inter-Church Commission for Justice and Peace (CIJP) sent the following comments on the Muriel Mining response:

- RE: Accusations by the Muriel Mining Corporation against indigenous peoples and human rights defenders [DOC], 3 Jul 2009

This fresh stigmatisation of CIJP’s actions seeks to distract attention from the factual and legal grounds for arguing that there has not been a true and genuine consultation process, and that the Muriel’s exploration has been on sacred land.
