Marshalls renews campaign to end child labour in India’s stone quarries

A paving supplier [Marshalls] has renewed its campaign to end child exploitation at India’s stone quarries...Children as young as five undertake back-breaking labour every day to quarry and cut the stone, which is destined for the UK market. Chris Harrop, group marketing director for Marshalls…said the answer was not for importers and retailers or withdraw product and stop trading with Indian quarries and suppliers. Instead, they should seek to improve the supply chains and make the industry more ethical to help tackle the human rights and worker rights abuses and improve conditions for the communities who depend on the industry for their living.
