Myanmar: Govt. sues two factories for using formalin in cakes; conducts surprise checks on products

Yangon's Food and Drug Administration will sue two factories for using formalin in blood cakes, even as it mulls to ban temporarily the sale of red bean cakes in the market amid persistent formalin contamination….

The formalin-contained bloods cakes were found in two shops…when an FDA team conducted a surprise inspection in shops….

“Formalin is not allowed to be used in food as it can be poisonous,” Dr Khin Saw Hla said….

The use of formalin in rice noodle and bean cake or tofu decline but the use of formalin in red bean cakes is still common, according to the FDA.

The FDA said that if the use of formalin in red bean cakes remains high, the regional government might decide to temporarily ban the product from being sold in the market.

Department of Food and Drug Administration said that they will continue the market surveillance and conduct surprise checks to ensure the products sold in the markets are safe and fit for human consumption.
