Needy students get Sh1.2bn boost in Equity fees scheme [Kenya]

Equity Bank and its partners will this year spend Sh1.2 billion to finance tuition and accommodation fees for 2,000 students joining Form One under the Wings to Fly programme. Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi said that the money would support the recipients pursue secondary school education. “Every child is expected to spend Sh600,000 in a period of four years he or she will be in school,” said Mr Mwangi during the announcement of the 2014 scholarships...The programme is funded by Equity Group Foundation through a contributory fund involving The MasterCard Foundation with support from USAid, UKAid, individuals and corporate bodies. “The fund has really gone up in terms of support from partners and individuals and we will increase the number of recipients to 10,000 in 2015,’’ said Mr Mwangi. Wings to Fly was launched four years ago to offer financial support to learners from poor backgrounds to enable them pursue secondary and university education locally and abroad.
