Peru: Alert over new declaration of state of emergency due to peasant protests over MMG Las Bambas mining company not fulfillment of agreements

On August 16th, the Govt. declared state of emergency in the districts of Challhahuacho, Haquira and Mara, Cotabambas province, due to protesters blocking roads since August 6th. There were not clashes but there is still no dialogue between the company, the State and the communities. Last April 4th, members of the New Furebamba peasant community, located in the Challhuahuacho district, in Cotabambas, reached an agreement with MMG Las Bambas mining company representatives [part of China Minmetals].  It established that community members will be hired by the company…in previous days, some community members blocked the Yavi-Yavi sector, affecting the circulation of trucks with mining produce.
