In 2013, Gap Inc. asked Shift to review our Social & Environmental Responsibility report and offer reflections on the implications of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (Guiding Principles) for Gap Inc.’s efforts to respect human rights in our global supply chain...Shift provided us with several insights that we will consider as we continue to evolve our human rights strategy...[including:]...[a recommendation] that Gap Inc. further review the potential for significant impacts throughout our apparel and non-apparel supply chain, even where influence may be less obvious...The importance of integrating worker perspectives into our Monitoring and Capacity Building programs...Our continued use of root cause analysis...and analysis of how our own actions, such as purchasing practices, may at times contribute to negative human rights impacts...The importance of maintaining operational-level grievance mechanisms...The urgent need to address fire and building safety in Bangladesh in a collaborative manner...We see this review as a meaningful step toward better understanding how our efforts to respect human rights in our supply chain fit within the Guiding Principles framework.
