So. Africa: 1700 miners stage 2 day sit-in underground at Harmony Gold over bonuses; strike ends after company & unions intervention

1700 miners spent two nights underground at Harmony Gold's Kusasalethu mine in Johanesburg. Formal demands from the workers, given to the company in the midst of the strike action, included the payment of a special bonus, the removal of the general manager and an assurance that disciplinary action against them would not be pursued. Both the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the main unions in the mining sector, said they had nothing to do with the strike. AMCU said on Friday that it took part in the discussions with mine management, and will continue engaging with management. After hours of negotiations on Thursday, 18 employees were evacuated to the surface as a result of ill health. The rest made their way to the surface. Harmony’s chief executive, Peter Steenkamp said: “We are pleased that a resolution has been reached and that all our employees have returned to surface safely.” The company was, after the miners ended their strike action, undecided whether or not to take disciplinary action.
