Torture and murder of student and union activist Giulio Regeni in Egypt

Italian student Giulio Regeni was abducted and tortured to death in Egypt. Regeni was a PhD student at Cambridge University researching Egypt's independent trade unions. Regeni’s body was found on 3 February 2016 and showed marks of severe torture. Egyptian authorities first denied any involvement in or knowledge of Regeni’s death. In September 2016, Egyptian authorities admitted that Regeni had been investigated by the police a few days before his death.
