Two brothers have been jailed for six years under the Modern Slavery Act for exploiting Polish workers in Sports Direct’s warehouse in Derbyshire and stealing the majority of their wages...[they] identified targets in their native Poland with the help of “spotters”... gave them coach tickets to Britain, according to the Crown Prosecution Service. The CPS said the workers were housed in “squalid accommodation” in Nottingham and brought to an employment agency called Transline, through which some of them were given work at Sports Direct’s warehouse in Shirebrook...The incident will fuel concerns about exploitation at the bottom of Britain’s flexible labour market, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on migrant workers...Transline said it had reported the brothers to the police as soon as it learnt about them...Sports Direct said: “We welcome the conviction of these two individuals, who were brought to justice after being reported to police by the Transline agency and Sports Direct in February 2016. It sends a clear message that we will not tolerate these kinds of behaviour.” There was no suggestion that Sports Direct or its employment agency had any involvement in the brothers’ criminal scheme, according to the CPS...
