UK: Govt reprimands 16 Welsh employers for failing to pay minimum or living wage

Author: WalesOnline, Published on: 16 February 2017

"These are the employers in Wales named and shamed for not paying staff the minimum or living wage"

A care firm which underpaid more than 150 workers by an average of £357 each has been “named and shamed” by the UK Government. More than 350 companies UK-wide have been named after being fined for not paying their employees either the national minimum wage or the living wage. And there are 16 Welsh firms on the list. Among them is Haverfordwest-based Pembrokeshire Care Limited, which stumped up £55,000 too little – affecting 154 workers. A variety of businesses across Wales – from bars to bakeries – are today named by the UK Government after HMRC recovered arrears and fined the firms on their list. Also on the list is Debenhams, who failed to pay £134,900 to almost 12,000 employees across the UK. WalesOnline attempted to contact all of the named Welsh firms for an explanation. Many said they were only listed because of misunderstandings or miscommunications. All we spoke to have since repaid what was owed...Business Minister Margot James said: “Every worker in the UK is entitled to at least the national minimum or living wage and this government will ensure they get it. “That is why we have named and shamed more than 350 employers who failed to pay the legal minimum, sending the clear message to employers that minimum wage abuses will not go unpunished.” [refers to Zia Nina, Wales Interactive Limited, Glanmor’s Bakery, Sam’s Grill House, MDT Electrical Limited, 118 Limited, UC Better Window Cleaning, Majka Polish Shop, Corporate Food Company Limited, Dawsons (Wales) Ltd, Pembrokeshire Care Limited, Autostop Tyres & Exhaust Centre, Idols, Pride in Care companies responses provided in article]
