USA: Bass Pro Shops settle lawsuit over alleged discrimination against minorities in its hiring practices for $10.5 million

Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World will pay $10.5 million to settle a federal lawsuit that alleged the company discriminated against minorities in its hiring practices at its stores nationwide.

Part of that money will be used to provide "monetary relief" to applicants who claimed they were discriminated against while seeking jobs with Bass Pro, according to the agreement.  

The initial EEOC [Equal Employment Opportunity Commission] complaint, filed in 2011, accused the company of failing to hire qualified black and Hispanic job applicants. The company also was accused in court documents of retaliating against some employees who objected to the hiring practices…

The company released a statement indicating it would use part of the $10.5 million to "implement a comprehensive program to further strengthen the company's effort to recruit minority employees."

Bass Pro Shops also noted that allegations of discrimination by Bass Pro founder John Morris "were found to be false and without merit."…
