McDonald's will pay $56,500 to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on behalf of a deaf job applicant. The EEOC filed the charge against Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald's Corp. and McDonald's Restaurants of Missouri after a restaurant in Belton, Missouri refused to interview the applicant because of his deafness, despite his previous experience as a cook and clean-up team member at a McDonald's in another state...After first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process, EEOC filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri in December 2015. The charge alleged that the restaurant's repeated refusal to interview the man violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  The lawsuit said the man, who is unable to hear or speak, applied online in June 2012 for a position at the Belton McDonald's. When the restaurant manager learned that he needed a sign language interpreter for his job interview, she canceled the interview...The settlement requires the Belton McDonald's, which is under new ownership, to ensure that management employees are trained on the ADA's requirements, including providing reasonable accommodations to disabled applicants and employees...
