Zambia: 300 miners choked by gas fumes at Mopani mine; 17 hospitalised and discharged

Over 300 miners at Kitwe’s Mopani Mindola Underground mine were Monday morning gassed after a loader hit into a three point three kilo watt power line. Mine workers Union of Zambia President Nkole Chishimba says 17 of the miners were admitted for observation at Wusakile mine Hospital and have since been discharged...He said over 300 miners who were on shift during this period were choked by the fumes from the burning power line...Meanwhile, one mine has died at Mopani Copper mines in Mufulira after a blast. Mr. Nkole who could not give further details on the fatality is concerned with the increasing number of accidents in various mining companies on the Copperbelt...
