Myanmar: Human Rights Now urges Honeys HD to provide corrective measures for dismissed workers such as compensation; incl. co. comments

IndustriALL Global Union

"ハニーズ海外子会社に人権侵害問題 「過度な生産ノルマ、労働組合への妨害があった」," 25 December 2024

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

On 10 December 2024, the nonprofit organization Human Rights Now (HRN) pointed out human rights violations at Honeys Garment Industry Limited (HGIL), a Myanmar subsidiary of Honeys Holdings Co., Ltd. (Honeys HD). HRN claims that excessive production quotas have been set, which could be considered forced labour that damages the health of workers, and that there have been obstructions to labour union activities.

HGIL has also filed a lawsuit against Daw Myo Myo Aye, seeking damages for her efforts to improve working conditions, and reported dismissing 366 workers who participated in strikes and protests.

On 17 December 2024, Honeys HD decided to withdraw the lawsuit due to the prolonged nature of the case and the lack of prospects for a resolution. However, HRN argues that simply withdrawing the lawsuit is not enough, and that compensation for the dismissed workers and corrective measures for human rights violations in the factory are also necessary.

Honeys HD has stated that it will "respond as necessary."
