Cambodia: Business experts concerns over increasing land disputes and environmental impacts caused by Funan Techo Canal project development despite acknowledging new investment opportunities

Research by real estate agent CBRE Cambodia has revealed that stretches along the Funan Techo Canal have the potential to attract investment in real estate, with experts calling for studies to ensure no issues occur…

“However, it's worth noting that not all areas surrounding the corridor will be good investments. Therefore, proper assessments and consultations with experts are highly recommended prior to any commitment.”

According to the report, the canal is expected to significantly impact city and provincial development. It also has the potential to redirect Phnom Penh's industrial developments from the west to the south and southeast, influencing the city's overall development direction…

Ann Thida, Managing Director of PropNex Cambodia, said the canal will bring many advantages and new developments…

However, despite these benefits, Thida raised concerns. “Infrastructure development and increased economic activity along the river may lead to the social displacement of local communities and the loss of traditional livelihoods,” she said.

She is also worried about water pollution. For instance, pollution from transportation activities, industrial drainage and waste disposal can degrade water quality, affecting aquatic life and people living in the areas…
