Greece: efood email calling on couriers to work on self-employed basis or end contract sparks outrage among drivers & customers; incl. company comments
In September 2021, an email from efood, informing 115 couriers that their contract with the company would not be renewed unless they worked on a freelance basis went viral on social media, resulting in a customer backlash.
Using hashtags such as #cancel_efood, customers announced they had uninstalled the efood application and would no longer use the service. Google users also downgraded the apps performance from 4.5 to 1 star.
In a statement, e-food stated they regretted the 'incorrect wording', and that they had 'no intention of creating a climate of insecurity among distributors, but instead offered to those workers whose contracts were expiring [on 30 September], a new way of working with the company that will work positively for both parties'.
In response to the email, couriers planned to strike across Greece, beginning with a 4-hour work stoppage, and a 24-hour strike to follow a few days after.
