Guatemala: Oxec Hydroelectric Station to Resume Operations

The Constitutional Court has authorized the continuation of operations of the Oxec I and II Stations for a period of 12 months, while consulting indigenous peoples in the area...The decision comes more than two months after the Court ratified the suspension of operations, for allegedly not consulting indigenous peoples in the area before starting the projects.
Elperiodico.com.get reports that..."The CC...states that if the consultation is not carried out for reasons attributable to the State, the parties may request an extension of the period indicated in order to continue operations...If the consultation is not carried out due to causes attributable to the hydroelectric companies, the MEM will be asked to immediately cancel the operating licenses that have already been granted. However, if this consultation process is not carried out due to causes attributable to indigenous peoples, the hydroelectric projects will continue their operations..."
