"Working overtime without a day off", 22 January 2024

At NEW FUBON Company Limited, which opened at Shwe Lim Van Industrial Zone, Hlaing Tharya West Township, Yangon Region, the workers said that they were being forced to work overtime and not getting a rest day, which was affecting their health.

It is reported that the...factory has been operating with more than 150 workers making [clothes for the] MOHITO brand, and the factory has only been open for about 4 months.

Currently, they are being forced to work without an EC contract, and they are forcing them to take overtime without the consent of the workers, and on official holidays, public holidays and Saturdays, they are having a hard time because...they have to work overtime and work overnight (all night) and the next day they have to go to work regularly and suffer from health problems due to lack of sleep.

"The main thing is lack of sleep. If you don't [work] overtime...[the] next day, the super[visor] and the manager pressure and discriminate. Because of that, the workers have no choice..." said a worker.

The worker said that he had to go on such overnight stays for at least 15 days each...

In addition, the worker said that the [target] for the workers in the workplace is not set consistently, [and it] is increasing every day, and they are asking for more than the amount that can be sewn.

"...[they] insist [on the workers] doing [the shifts] without going to the toilet without drinking water... If we don't [meet the target], the super[visors] are still rude...if new employees want to [get paid] the wages they paid in the previous factories, they are told to quit immediately and leave at once...
