On 7 December 2022 it was reported that a Filipino migrant worker died from injuries sustained in a workplace accident conducting repairs at the luxury hotel hosting the Saudi Arabian team. The man's employer was reported as Salam Petroleum.

The hotel, the Sealine Beach Resort, is owned by Katara Hospitality. Katara owns properties across four continents in Qatar, Egypt, Morocco, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand and USA.

A Qatari government official said: "If the investigation concludes that safety protocols were not followed, the company will be subject to legal action and severe financial penalties..."

FIFA said it was "...deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and sympathies are with the worker's family. "As soon as FIFA was made aware of the accident, we contacted the local authorities to request more details. "FIFA will be in a position to comment further once the relevant processes in relation to the worker's passing have been completed."

The head of the Supreme Committee Nasser Al Khater, attracted criticism when he responded to questions about the worker's death by saying "Death is a natural part of life whether you're at work or in your sleep..."

We invited Katara Hospitality and Salam Petroleum to respond but they did not.

In March 2023, The Guardian reported Qatari authorities have filed a criminal case against Salam Petroleum.
