South Africa: A bill on digital taxi sector yet to be enacted by the Govt eagerly awaited by e-drivers
E-hailing drivers face many challenges including safety and in-app security. They are victims of attacks and robbery leading in some case to killings. They decry that under current regulatory environment, technology platforms such as Uber and Bolt have no legal obligation to ensure protection of their drivers.
In 2020, the Ministry of Transport Fikile Mbalule submitted the National Land Transport Amendment Bill to the national assembly for consideration to regulate e-hailing services, impose certain obligations on technology providers and ensure security of e-hailing taxi drivers.
