Taiwan: Indonesian workers allege wage withholding & mistreatment on You Fu fishing vessel; company denies deliberate delay
In August 2024, ten Indonesian migrant fishers working on the Taiwanese-flagged distant water fishing vessel "You Fu" alleged severe labor rights violations, including 11-15 months of unpaid wages totaling US$80,850, poor living conditions, and verbal abuse. The vessel owner subsequently denied deliberately delaying payments and refuted some of the allegations. This case has sparked discussions about labor practices in Taiwan's fishing industry, with human rights organizations calling for stronger regulations to prevent "wage theft" and protect migrant workers' rights.
