Residents of Maraldy village in the East Kazakhstan region have been protesting the construction of the gold-producing plant in the area for years.

On the 20th of July 2023, local activists clashed with workers constructing the facility. The activists demanded a halt to the construction work, citing environmental issues. According to local residents, the company's security brutally dispersed the villagers and journalists who were at the site before police arrived.
