ASICS further statement on arrest of local union leader

[ASICS sent a further statement to Business & Human Rights Resource Centre on 27 June 2024 on further developments in the arrest of a local union leader in Cambodia]

ASICS reaffirms our commitment to upholding labor rights, freedom of association, and ethical practices as outlined in our Supplier Code of Conduct. We believe that all workers are entitled to the same fundamental rights, including the right to freely associate and organize. Based on this policy, we have been actively engaged in factory audits and collaborative improvement activities for factory operations. We have also encouraged our suppliers to join “Better Work,” a factory improvement program promoted by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

ASICS takes any alleged intervention in Freedom of Association very seriously. We have urged Wing Star Shoes to cease all interference and retaliation against union activities, to respect workers' rights to organize, and to take measures to ensure the safety of relevant personnel as well as transparency with our stakeholders.

We noted the judicial decision regarding Mr. Chan's case. While we will continue to uphold our commitments to labor rights and freedom of association, we strive to gain a comprehensive understanding of every situation to ensure our actions align with factual evidence, our values, principles, and applicable laws. We will continue to monitor the situation within our supply chain and are open to further discussions to address any concerns.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
