The EU passed a new regulation in May 2017 to stem the trade in conflict minerals. The Conflict Minerals Regulation requires EU companies to ensure they import 'conflict minerals', gold, tungsten, tin and tantalum, from responsible sources only by inter alia following the UNGP's 'Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas'.

On 1 January 2021 the new regulation came into effect.
