QMM's statement on arrests & clashes between protestors and police

Press Release
Road blocking - QMM
Thursday, November 4, 2021

This Saturday, October 30, 2021, a barricade was erected by about thirty individuals on the axis Ford-Dauphin - Mandena road blocking traffic on this strategic artery for the region. This disruption also had the effect of hindering any entry and / or exit from the site Rio Tinto QMM mining company.

This axis being a public highway, defense and security forces, guarantor of public order, were deployed to initiate talks with representatives of the movement. We understand that following unsuccessful talks, law enforcement officials have
proceeded with the dismantling of the dam and the arrest of the presumed leaders of the movement.

Under the leadership of the Governor of the Anosy Region, the various stakeholders, including QMM and the main representatives of demonstrators, gathered on November 1 to try to find a concerted solution to this dispute. At the end of this dialogue, QMM committed to:

  • Continue the work carried out by the unique grievance mechanism
  • Continue the implementation of program-contracts to the benefit of communities
  • Ensure, in close collaboration with the regional authorities, the establishment of the committee to follow up on complaints and community concerns as soon as possible

QMM reaffirms its intention to find a peaceful solution to any dispute through dialogue.
