Brazil: Suzano's supposed sustainable agenda is causing environmental damage and conflicts with the land rights of indigenous and quilombolas, claim environmentalists

MST

Suzano Papel e Celulose has been committed to adopting a sustainable agenda: besides being a member of the Brazilian Coalition for Climate, Forests and Agriculture and having taken an active stance at COP26, the company maintains that its eucalyptus plantations contribute to the "preservation of local species, the regulation of hydrological cycles and the removal and storage of carbon dioxide", thus combating the global climate crisis.

Some organizations, such as WWF Brasil and the NGO SOS Mata Atlântica, agree with the company.

Other environmentalists, however, claim that the expansion of eucalyptus monoculture would be causing widespread environmental damage in the country, since the pulp mills would be major polluters and that eucalyptus forests do not have the same biodiversity as tropical forests. Furthermore, those who are against Suzano's policy highlight the emergence of land conflicts between indigenous communities and quilombas and the company, which would be taking over these territories.

We invited Suzano to comment on the allegations and the company did so.
