Chevron Judge Delays Issuing Order in Ecuador Case
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan…postponed deciding whether to grant a preliminary injunction blocking lawyers for Ecuadorean citizens who sued Texaco Inc., acquired by Chevron in 2001, from seeking assets of the second-largest U.S. oil company. On Feb. 8, Kaplan issued a temporary restraining order barring Ecuadorean plaintiffs from enforcing the judgment, saying the likelihood of “irreparable injury” to Chevron is “quite high.”… Randy Mastro, a lawyer for Chevron, asked Kaplan to convert a preliminary injunction into a more-permanent one, saying the plaintiffs “have litigated ably all around the world to wreak havoc upon Chevron.”…Kaplan agreed to give lawyers until Feb. 24 to submit expert affidavits about Equadorian law.
