China Union Employees Claim Modern Slavery [Liberia]

Response provided.] Several workers of China Union have described the current work condition at the former Bong Mines concession site as a complete modern slavery…Dozens of aggrieved workers…said, the Government made a mistake by signing the concession agreement with China Union. “Look, in China, there is no company known as China Union. They have WISCO. Our lawmakers should have done due diligence before granting this concession to the Chinese. They are treating us like slaves on a daily basis." " We do not rest at all when we are working. We do not have medical benefits, but the Chinese working here do. They treat us like slaves and they treat the Chinese like Kings over us. We cannot be slaves in our own country”, Augustine Peterson said. They accused the company of reneging on its social agreement, especially road construction and renovation of the old Bong Town, among others…
