SPDC has publically acknowledged that two oil spills...that affected the Bodo community in 2008 were caused by operational issues. We accepted responsibility for those spills, and in line with our commitment to cleaning up all spills that come from our facilities carried out cleanup operations in Bodo. In addition, SPDC will pay appropriate compensation...The reality is that our efforts to undertake cleanup in Bodo have been hampered by the repeated impact of sabotage and bunkering spills. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that over 150,000 barrels of oil a day are stolen in the Niger Delta – that cannot be ignored...SPDC is committed to working with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to improve the environment in the Niger Delta by cleaning up spills, improving security to reduce illegal activity, and upgrading our infrastructure.
