UNIONISTS are providing food coupons for hundreds of unpaid workers employed by a multinational hotels chain. The General Federation of Bahrain Trade Union has taken up the case of about 200 workers, employed in different properties operated by the Ramee Group of Hotels. The union’s hotels and catering head Suad Mubarak said they continue to follow up the case with the Labour and Social Development Ministry. “There are about 200 workers employed by Ramee Group of Hotels who told us they have not received their salaries since January,” claimed Ms Mubarak. “This was before the Covid-19 situation and these workers of different nationalities are living in dire conditions.“We have spoken with Labour Ministry officials regarding this case, and will continue to follow it up.” A company representative told the GDN yesterday that the pending dues for January have been cleared, while work was ongoing to resolve the issue, citing the economic impact caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The GDN previously reported that hospitality workers, including Bahrainis working in four- and five-star properties, were asked to go on unpaid leave, accept pay cuts and outstanding wages due to the virus outbreak [subscription only].
