On 18th September 2023, unidentified persons shot 22 bullets into the home of environmental human rights defender, José Ramiro Lara Zavala, a member of the Association of Non-Government Organisations ASONOG in Honduras. He was not harmed despite the bullets being shot into the window of the room where he was sleeping. He and the ASONOG have denounced the mass deforestation near the community of El Carrizal, Copán, in western Honduras, provoked by mining interests in the region. This deforestation is causing a water crisis for communities in the area.
