Kazakhstan: Striking employees of Tengizchevroil subcontractor demand pay rise & better working conditions, company says it already increased salaries

Atyrau region: Employees of Senimdi Kurylys at Tengiz stop their strike, 12 February 2023

According to one of the employees their strike at the Senimdi Kurylys (SK) - contractor of Tengizchevroil at the Tengiz field in the Atyrau region- ended yesterday at 23:00 local time. The representative of the company's management confirmed this information, but it is yet unclear whether the demands of the workers will be fulfilled.

On February 11, more than 200 SK workers went on strike from 10:30 am, demanding a 20 percent increase in wages, better working conditions, in particular - reduction in the length of the shift period from four to two weeks, provision of personal protective equipment and better living conditions in dormitories. In addition, they demanded a one-time payment of 500 thousand tenge due to high inflation...

Zhazira Aneskyzy, the deputy director for general affairs at SK, told RFE/RL that the company had already raised wages by 8.4 percent since January this year and does not have the ability to raise wages beyond that. According to her, in connection with the growth of inflation, the employees will be paid a lump sum of 300 thousand tenge until March 10, in addition to the salary for February. She explained that lump sum payments of 500,000 tenge will be given to employees of TCO oilfield services contractors who did not have an 8.4 percent salary increase...
