Mozambique: TotalEnergies denies that it failed to effectively protect workers killed during terrorist attack
In October 2023, news about complaint filed by victims and their families against French company TotalEnergies for "involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist a person in danger" following a jihadist attack in Palma, Mozambique in 2021 went viral. It was mentions that some employees of the company were among the more than 1,000 killed or missing. Seven survivors and relatives of victims of a jihadist attack in Mozambique announced on Monday that they had filed a complaint against TotalEnergies for "involuntary manslaughter and failure to provide assistance to a person in danger".
The French energy company, rejects this accusations stating: " Mozambique LNG implemented the measures required by the emergency and following security procedures, including a pre-established evacuation plan. Given the exceptional nature of the situation, Mozambique LNG evacuated a large number of civilians and provided emergency aid, medical care, and human and material resources to the civilians sheltering in the entrance to the site." According to the company, an evacuation and assistance plan was implemented as soon as the attack started.
