"Public Consultation was held for the environmental impact assessment of the construction of two deep seaports and associated facilities in Kyauk Phyu, Rakhine State" 29 August 2022

A public consultation meeting was conducted at Kyuakphyu Hotel on August 27 for the environmental impact assessment of Made Island Port, Yanbye Island Port, and associated facility (a 15 Km Access Road and Bridge). These are the three components under the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone Deep Sea Port (KPSEZ DSP) Project in Kyaukphyu, Rakhine State.

During the meeting, the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone Management Committee- the project company, CITIC Consortium, HATCH Associates Ltd (the Project Management Consultant) and Myanmar Survey Research (MSR) explained the project overview, potential environmental and social impacts of the project and plan for designing and implementation of the mitigation measures. Then, the officials from CITIC Myanmar, HATCH and MSR (A third-party consortium for ESIA) discussed the feedback and opinion with relevant SAC government departments, civil society organizations, INGOs and the local community. The Consultation pointed out environmental and social issues such as land acquisition, impacts on livelihood and destruction impact on water resources and the need to pay attention to these issues for the project design and implementation.

The number of affected populations to be displaced for the deep seaport project alone is still unknown. However, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) report estimated the possible relocation of 20000 people for the whole SEZ project.
