On 15th June, CNA reported an Indian worker employed by Aik Sun Demolition and Engineering died at a building site where Fuji Xerox Towers was being demolished, in Tanjong Pagar, Singapore.

A structure collapsed on the worker. The site was being redeveloped as Newport Plaza by City Developments. CNA also notes that the construction company Woh Hup was the worksite occupier.

As a general safety measure, demolition works must be properly planned for structures to be demolished in a systematic manner.
The Building and Construction Authority and the Ministry of Manpower

The Building and Construction Authority has stopped all construction activities at the site, and has revoked the permits for all works while investigations are ongoing.

In response to CNA’s outreach, City Developments expressed its condolences to the worker's family, and said it is working with his employer, Aik Sun, to offer assistance. A spokesperson for City Developments said, "Our immediate priority is the well-being of the affected workers, and we are working closely with our contractors to provide the necessary support … Workplace safety is of paramount importance and we are cooperating fully with the authorities for a thorough investigation”.

The Resource Centre asked Aik Sun Demolition and Engineering to respond to the article and describe how it upholds worker welfare and health and safety standards on its sites. Aik Sun did not respond.

The Resource Centre also asked Woh Hup, the worksite occupier, to respond to the article by clarifying its business relationship with the worker's employer, Aik Sun Demolition and Engineering; clarify its involvement in the development of the site; and, describe how it upholds worker welfare and health and safety standards on its sites. Woh Hup did not respond.
