On January 10, a freighter operated by the Russian shipping company Westberg Ltd. was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Cypress for refueling. Once docked, Cypriot authorities were surprised to discover 60 tons of ammunition and explosives from Russia’s state arms dealer Rosoboronexport, which accounts for 80-90% of Russia’s total arms sales. Cyprus agreed to release the ship after assurances that it ultimate destination was Turkey, not Syria...Once free, the captain promptly turned off the ship’s tracking system and set a course for the Syrian port of Tartus...[The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Rosoboronexport to respond, but it did not do so.]
